MODULE 1 CONCEPTS YOU JUST WORKED

    • Your Lane (NFPA 470 Operations) — Recognize, isolate, deny entry, notify, protect the public, emergency decon, read the meter, keep the log. Technicians enter and survey. The Specialist models and advises. You hold and feed.
    • The Four Types — Alpha: paper stops it, deadly inside, invisible to your meter. Beta: contact hazard. Gamma: whole-body, through your gear, what you read at distance. Neutron: rare, shield with water.
    • The Alpha Gap — No first-due unit can see alpha or beta contamination. Near background is a blind reading, not a clean one.
    • Ionizing vs Non-Ionizing — Your meter only responds to ionizing. Cell towers never trip it, and that is the meter being right.
    • Confirmation, Two-Two-Two — Two readings, two locations, two instruments. A point source falls off with distance.
    • Exposed vs Contaminated — Exposed: identify and screen, no decon. Contaminated: clothing off, rinse, gentle wash, hold for survey.
    • ALARA — Distance first, time second, shielding from mass that is already there. Log everyone.
    • Inverse Square — Halve the distance, four times the rate. Predict, then confirm.
    • Labels and TI — mR/hr at 1 m from a closed package. Breached means the meter rules and the label still goes up the chain.
    • Half-Life — Two half-lives leaves 25%. A dated source is a live source.
    • RED / RDD / IND — Spread is the discriminator. Placement is the intent.
