MODULE 3 CONCEPTS YOU JUST WORKED
Your Lane (NFPA 470 8.10 / 9.10) — Field decon handles external contamination; internal contamination is a medical handoff. Recognize, protect, decon, escalate.
PPE Is a Barrier, Not a Shield — Per OSHA 1910.120, PPE isolates you from contamination. No PPE stops external penetrating gamma - that is time, distance, and shielding.
Right-Size the Suit — Known contaminant + O2 above 19.5% = Level C. Level A is a hazard you added, not one you solved.
The Complete Ensemble — Hooded suit, APR/PAPR, double gloves, boots - and a seal-checked respirator every time. The gap you skip is the path in.
Dry, Not Wet — Rad decon is dry (clothing removal) and hybrid (damp wipes), never gross water. A single drop of water shields alpha, so wet skin cannot be surveyed - and runoff spreads it. No hose, no shower line.
Airway First, No Resuspension — Protect the airway before you disturb the body; cut and roll clothing off gently and never dry-brush. Dry-brushing aerosolizes it, hosing shields the alpha survey - damp-wipe the residual instead.
Prove It Clean — Instruments confirm clean, and only on dry skin. A persistent dry-skin reading after decon means a wound or internal source - escalate, do not scrub harder.
Medical Never Waits — Radioactive contamination never delays life-saving care. Wrap the critical, transport, and notify the receiving facility.
Triage Drives Decon — Red clothing-removal-during-packaging and go, Yellow two-station, Green self-decon corridors, at-risk assisted. Sort decon to the triage category.
Scale to Survive — Start with what you have and expand; most good for the most people. Waiting for "enough" costs lives.
It Follows You Home — The last people on the line are you and your crew. Screen to clear before you leave the lanes, contain the gear so it does not ride the apparatus back, and document the internal dose a body survey cannot see. The day you shortcut your own loop is the day it reaches your family.
