Your Lane (NFPA 470 Operations) — Recognize, isolate, deny entry, protect the public, emergency decon, read the meter, keep the log. Technicians enter, survey, and run the RIID. The Specialist models and advises. You hold and feed.
The Rule of Two (2x2x2) — Two readings, two locations, two instruments before you commit the plan. A point source falls off with distance; a flat reading is a red flag.
Categorize by Spread (RREC) — No spread plus a point-of-contact is a contained industrial source. Spread rules out RED. A high number is not the same as a threat.
Radiation vs Medical — A low dose rate does not cause a sudden collapse. Acute radiation sickness needs a large dose and shows over hours to days. The patient is a medical patient first.
Two Worlds — RDD/RED is confirm and categorize. A nuclear detonation is survive and shelter. A mushroom cloud after an intense flash throws RREC overboard.
Damage Zones by Sight — SDZ, MDZ, LDZ. The moderate damage zone is the lifesaving priority. When EMP kills your meter, you read the zones by eye.
Dose Discipline — 5, 10, 25 rem guidelines; 50 rad is the withdrawal decision dose. Rotate crews, log time, control it with distance and shielding.
Dangerous Fallout & Decay — The plume grows downwind, then decays fast - about 100 R/hr at 1 hour to about 1 R/hr by 48. Shelter first, move later. Mass shields: get inside, or under the tank.
Get Inside, Stay Inside, Stay Tuned — Lowest level, most interior, 12 to 24 hours. Fire is the one exception. The family plan is built before the day.
The Neutron Gap — Your PRD reads gamma only. Fissile material reads low on gamma while throwing off neutrons. Low is not safe - get the RIID.
